Overview
Parc Montsouris is one of Paris's four large parks created by Baron Haussmann to give green spaces to each corner of the city. Opened in 1878 in the south of Paris, it was designed by landscape architect Jean-Charles Alphand in the English landscape style — a composition of sweeping lawns, winding paths, varied topography, and artful planting rather than the rigid geometry of French formal gardens. The park is relatively unknown to tourists but beloved by the residents of the 14th arrondissement and the international students of the nearby Cité Universitaire. Its artificial lake is home to ducks, swans, and the occasional heron. The park's meteorological station (operated by Météo-France) has been recording Paris's weather since 1872.
