Jardin de la Mosquée de Paris

39 Rue Geoffroy-Saint-Hilaire, 75005 Paris · 1 hectares

Overview

The garden of the Grande Mosquée de Paris is one of the most unexpected and transporting spaces in the city — a fragment of Andalusia hidden in the heart of the Latin Quarter. Built between 1922 and 1926 in the Hispano-Moorish style to honour the Muslim soldiers who fought for France in the First World War, the mosque complex includes a prayer hall, a hammam, a restaurant, and a celebrated salon de thé. The garden itself is an enclosed courtyard space inspired by the great Moorish gardens of southern Spain and Morocco: zellige mosaic tilework on the walls, horseshoe arches, a central fountain, and plantings of orange trees, jasmine, and Mediterranean flowers. On summer afternoons the salon de thé terrace — where Parisians sip mint tea and eat pastries — is one of the most pleasant spots in the 5th arrondissement.
