Esplanade des Invalides

Esplanade des Invalides, 75007 Paris · 8.15 hectares

Overview

The Esplanade des Invalides is one of the grandest formal green spaces in Paris — a long, immaculate rectangle of lawn extending from the gilded span of the Pont Alexandre III to the golden dome of the Hôtel des Invalides. It was designed by Robert de Cotte in 1704–1720 to serve as a monumental approach to the Hôtel des Invalides (commissioned by Louis XIV as a home and hospital for wounded soldiers). Flanked by two wide tree-lined promenades, the esplanade is a masterpiece of French formal urban planning. Today it serves as a public garden and occasional venue for public events — but primarily as an incomparable frame for the view of the Invalides, whose dome, gilded with 12 kilograms of gold leaf, glows magnificently above the lawn.
